The man behind the Black Eyed Peas hit songs Will.i.am joined “On Air with Ryan Seacrest” on Thursday morning to talk about his special that is airing on ABC this Sunday, making cars from scratch, and why he is collaborating with Justin Bieber.
Will.i.am has worked with many artists including Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, U2, Rihanna, Usher, Justin Timberlake, Nicki Minaj, and more. He is currently collaborating with teen pop sensation Justin Bieber. With this collaboration he is hoping to bring out the edge and drive in Justin.
“Justin as an artist has to fight. Michael Jackson fought, Prince fought, the ones that stood around for a long time are the ones that are always fighting for something. We know the ones that get comfortable and then their career is short, ‘Oh I remember that one song he had, that was cool,’” Will.i.am explained. “I want to get Justin Bieber into writing his own music and producing his own songs.”
He tells us that artists become better as they gain life experience and go through some tough times. Will.i.am cites coming out of the projects, 9-11, failed relationships, and concerns about the music industry as some of his toughest life experiences in his life, and says “That is why all Black Eyed Peas songs are positive songs.” Some of the hits he credits to these tough times are “Where Is The Love,” “The End,” and “I Got a Feeling.”
Will.i.am also told us about how he knows when a song he is writing will be a hit, “If it comes in 30 minutes it will be a hit, but if it takes 10 hours, that song sucks!” In addition to this, he told us that he will make beats and play them in underground clubs to see how people react. “If people move and get on their phone and start texting. Because if they are texting that means that there a song there.”
You may have seen Will.i.am on E! news last night talking with these robots about what he is doing with some kids for his special called “i.am FIRST: Science Is Rock and Roll,” that airs on Sunday night at 7/6c on ABC. The special highlights of the 20th Annual FIRST Championship, a worldwide science and robotics competition for students from kindergarten through high school.
“America is in a really odd space right now, there is not a lot of job creation and education is all messed up. So, this show is about what America could look like if this program STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) was in every single high school,” Will.i.am explains.
In addition to seeing the kids building robots and competing he adds, “We are going to have some performances, we have some special guests coming, Bono, Justin Bieber, Steven Tyler, Britney Spears, and intermingled with all of that there are some scientists that are on the show. I’m really trying to marry art and science.”
Did you know Will.i.am is also into building is also into building things? He told us this, “I got a sandwich from Subway, got in my car, was eating my sandwich, and I think, I wonder how much it costs to make this car? So, as I was eating my sandwich, having watched the dude make something that I could make myself, I thought of this idea and then I made three cars from scratch.” We are guessing that Will.i.am would have been a perfect candidate for this program as a kid!
You can see “i.am FIRST: Science is Rock and Roll” when it airs Sunday August 14th at 7/6c on ABC. For more information you can go to the Official Website or follow @iamfirsttv on Twitter and like on Facebook.
