Former LA Galaxy player and NBC soccer analyst at the Olympics, Kyle Martino called in to “On Air with Ryan Seacrest” on Friday to talk about the U.S. Women’s Soccer gold medal win, the upcoming men’s soccer final, and weighs in on David Beckham not getting picked to play for Team GB.
On Beckham Not Being Picked To Play For Team GB:
“It was a terrible decision. I’ve become close with David from playing with LA and I talked to him after the decision came out and he was devastated. Because not only did he care so much about bringing the Olympics here and was such a huge part of it. So, of course there is a sentimental and political reason to involve him in the Great Britain team, but he’s still a phenomenal soccer player. He would have helped that team so much. Not only in the locker room in his presence, but also the player he is. They ended up going out in penalties and you have to think if you have David Beckham standing over a penalty he doesn’t miss like Sturridge did. It’s just sad, because everyone Great Britain wanted him there and the head coach was a little too stubborn to include him.”
The head coach had the power to pick him and didn’t. “That’s where it comes in to a area of it being a little personal. Everyone is lobbying for David Beckham and he flew over to LA to go watch David play in the Home Depot Center and said he didn’t like what he saw, it wasn’t good enough, but I don’t buy it. I mean David has been outstanding in the league, he’s still a world class player and that was a big mistake not to include him in the team.”
On The US Women’s Soccer Win:
It was a dramatic 2-1 victory over the team that defeated them in last year’s World Cup final. “That was insane. We are the champions playing 80,000 at Wembley, the women getting the gold…it doesn’t get any bigger than that,” Kyle says. “Sometimes huge games like this can let you down, it can be the big sequel that you think is going to be amazing and it did not let down at all. Japan brought their A game and went toe-to-toe with the United States, all the stars showed up. Hope Solo made 2 huge saves. Carli Lloyd who didn’t start the tournament, she was on the bench and came on in that first game and was just an absolute hero throughout the tournament ever since then, comes up with 2 enormous goals. We went to the after party last night, all the girls with their gold medals around their neck, Kevin Durant showed up, Dwayne Wade showed up, it was epic.”
On Men’s Soccer Final Mexico vs. Brazil:
“Mexico, they were outstanding for the group stage. They were unscored upon and they weren’t thought of as a favorite,” Kyle tells us. “Mexico lost their star player, he got hurt in the last game. So, they have a little more of a mountain to climb now that they don’t have their talisman. But Brazil is a tomb full of stars. Neymar is the best player in the tournament. This is a guy who already plays for the full Brazil team, who’s lit this tournament up. No one’s been able to have an answer for the attacking prowess of Brazil. So, Mexico have a huge game to play.”
